CAT 2020 finally went underway on 29th November 2020 amid the COVID 19 pandemic. The regulations were strictly observed and the safety of the aspirants was duly attended to. With the reduction of the test time from the usual 3 Hours to 2 Hours, the number of Questions were also reduced. The first slot had 76 Questions. The break up is as follows.

The marking scheme was the usual of +3 for a correct answer and -1 for an incorrect answer. The Overall difficulty of CAT 2020 Slot 1 was a little higher than CAT 2019 with VA/RC being a little tricky and lengthy, DI/LR getting back to its usual way with a slight breather in CAT 2019, and QA being the easiest of the three.

We now go on to the sectional analysis

VA/RC

There were 18 questions across 4 passages and each passage was around 500 words plus. 2 RCs contained 5 questions whereas 2 contained 4 questions. The RCs were certainly dense in nature and as is the case in CAT the options were close and thus required careful reading. The passages were from Science, Political Science, Language, Grammar, and Communication. Another passage was from Economics. The questions were from the Main Idea, Inference based, etc.

The other questions constituted of 3 questions of Summary, 3 of Sentence rearrangement, and 2 Out of Context. These were relatively easier.

A good attempt in this section would be around 19-21 questions with an 80-85% accuracy.

DI/LR

DI/LR was a shade different and difficult as compared to last year. There were 24 questions 3 sets of 4 questions and 2 sets of 6 questions. After a long time, a set with 6 questions was seen in CAT. The set based on set theory was the easiest. Another set with 4 questions was on puzzles. The sets with 6 questions were logic based DI.

A good attempt in this section would be around 13-14 with 85% accuracy.

QA

This was probably the easiest of the sections with 26 questions and had 8 TITA questions. There were around 11 questions from Arithmetic which covered all the areas. Around 8 questions from Algebra were mostly from Quadratic, Log, and Functions. There were around 3 questions from Numbers and Geometry.

An ideal attempt in this section would be around 16-18 questions with around 85% accuracy.

We at Cf Patna, believe that an overall score of around 103-108 would be good enough for a 99 percentile. We would come up with the analysis of Slot 2 &3 shortly.

All the Best !!!
